The prestigious award returns this year after the 2020 edition was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Lionel Messi won the 2019 Ballon d'Or title after beating out competition from Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and long-standing rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The French publication have confirmed that a jury of 180 journalists will determine the 30 nominees for the men's award, while 50 journalists will do the same for the women's accolade, which includes 20 nominees.

Mohamed Salah and Riyad Mahrez were the only players from the African continent to make the 30-man nominees list.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 27 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.
