Official: Wydad Miss Out On 2024/25 CAFCL Qualification

Following their latest defeat this past weekend, Wydad Athletic Club are officially out of contention to qualify for next season's CAF Champions League.

The 2023/24 campaign has not been an enjoyable one for the Red Castle, both on the continent and domestically.

They tasted defeat at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns in the African Football League final in November, before going on to suffer group-stage elimination in both the Arab Club Champions Cup and the Champions League.

Their fortunes did not get any better in Morocco as they were dumped out of the Throne Cup in the first round by JS Soualem.

The arrest of their club president and the revolving managerial door have not helped their situation, and they now find themselves in fifth position on the league table.

Their latest defeat, a 1-0 loss to Botola Pro league leaders FAR Rabat on Saturday, was their eight in the top flight this season, leaving them 20 points away from the final Champions League qualification spot, which is currently occupied by bitter rivals Raja Athletic Club.

This means they are now mathematically out of the running to qualify for next season's continental showpiece, and will miss it for the first time since the 2014/15 season.

Having made the final of the tournament in its past two iterations, this illustrates a significant drop-off for the north African giants.

Wydad are still the race to qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup, though, as they are only six points behind RS Berkane, who are in third place.
