One of Manchester United's rising stars has reportedly been approached to make an international switch and represent an African team.
Anthony Elanga, who made his senior debut for United at the end of the 2021/22 season, has been establishing himself as the latest academy product to be integrated into the first team at Old Trafford.
His performances have seemingly caught the eye of the Cameroonian Football Association (FECAFOOT) and, according to Footazimut, the Indomitable Lions are eager to recruit the 19-year-old.
Elanga is of Cameroonian heritage, with both his parents being from the west African nation. However, the forward was born in Hyllie, Sweden, and has represented the Scandinavian nation at U17 and U21 level.
He is also eligible to represent England's senior team, having moved to the country from Sweden when he was 12 years old.
With an ageing side, Indomitable Lions boss Antonio Conceicao is reportedly keen to inject some youthfulness into his squad, and it is believed that he and FECAFOOT have already had talks with the young forward and his representatives in a bid to try to persuade the young forward to play for them.
His mother and agent are said to be against the switch, though, which could prove a stumbling block in getting Elanga to make the change.
The forward's father, a former professional footballer himself, represented Cameroon on 17 occasions, including at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, a sentimental element that could be played in the negotiating process.
Irrespective of the reports, Sweden team manager Stefan Pettersson is not concerned about losing one of the side's brightest talents.
"He [Anthony] has been in our business for a long time with the youth teams and he was asked for the January," the 58-year-old recently said.
"Of course, we're in control. He knows very well that he is high on the list of Swedish football because he has been with it for so long."
The Sweden-born youngster has scored three goals in 15 games for United's first team so far.
