The next version of Africa's most prestigious football tournament was supposed to be held after the 2024/25 season concludes, but with the FIFA Club World Cup set to be held in the United States of America during that time, there is now a lack of clarity regarding when the African competition will be showcased.

With a number of new dates having since been suggested, AFCON 2025 hosts Morocco will not be able to hold the spectacle at the beginning of 2025 because it is still improving its stadium infrastructure for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which it will co-host with Spain and Portugal.
December 2025 also reportedly does not work as FIFA plan to host the Arab Cup in Qatar.
As a result of the persistent clashes throughout 2025, according to WinWin, some of the football associations and federations on the continent have suggested that the next AFCON be held from July 20 to August 17 in 2026, shortly after the FIFA World Cup that year.

The same report also claims, though, that some have also deemed early 2026 as the most appropriate time to host the tournament.
