Aubameyang Sets Lofty World Cup Goal After Brace Vs Benni

Former Barcelona and Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has set lofty expectations for Gabon after his two goals handed Benni McCarthy his first defeat as Kenya boss.

On Sunday evening, the legendary striker scored a brace as the Panthers downed McCarthy's Harambee Stars 2-1 at the Nyayo National Stadium. The result has now seen the Central African outfit ascend to the top of Group X of FIFA World Cup qualifiers in the CAF region.

A first-half strike from just inside the Kenyan box in the 17th minute and a 52nd-minute penalty from the clinical marksman saw his side earn a valuable three points, as they leapfrogged reigning African champions Ivory Coast in their qualification group.

Aubameyang, however, is gunning to lead his nation to their first-ever appearance at the global showpiece, and prior to the match against the former Manchester United assistant, he revealed that competing in Mexico, Canada, and the United States of America was at the forefront of their ambitions as a nation.

"[To qualify for World Cup] That would be something crazy and amazing and obviously it has never happened before so it is a big target for us to try to go to the World Cup. I think it would be my best dream and hopefully I will achieve it," the veteran striker told Pulse Sports Kenya.

Aubameyang is 35 years old and, despite his age, is still performing at an elite level, having already scored 13 goals in 25 appearances in Saudi Arabian football this season.

When quizzed about how much longer he plans on playing, he said: "Age is just a number, players play until 40, 41 and I am only 35. I still have time and I feel good and that is the most important."

"As long as I still feel healthy, I will play my game and try to give my best always."
