The story
Furman caught up with fellow ex-Matsatsantsa midfielder, Michael Morton and looked back on his playing days in Mzansi.
The midfielder played his football in South Africa for SuperSport United, from the years 2015 to 2020 and earned over 50 caps for Bafana Bafana.
He rubbed shoulders and shared change rooms with a host of supreme South African ballers of the previous decade, but was left stunned by two current Downs midfield maestros.
Furman shared his impressions of Mokoena and Mbule when they first got promoted to the first team at Matsatsantsa, mentioning that the two had that wow factor, similar to their teammate Bongani Zungu.
"You know, sometimes, someone just makes you go 'WOW!' I remember Bongani Zungu, I hadn't really seen him before, but in his first national team call-up I said to Bongani Khumalo; 'Wow, who's this?' and it was exactly the same with Tebza and Sipho," stated Furman.
"Tebza's first day, his first training session, sometimes a young player might make the simple pass or whatever, Tebza got the ball and hit one of his 30-yard screamers past Ronwen [Williams] and Yeye and I looked at each other like; 'Oh, who's this?'
"Sipho was being Sipho, dribbling past everyone and I always remember Clayton smashed him. Like a typical Clayton tackle, like 'Who's this youngster trying to show us all up?' and Clayton hit him hard. But already I could see there's something special about these two [Mbule Mokoena]," shared Furman, who reflected on just how far both Mbule and Mokoena have come in their careers since leaving SuperSport.
