Did Pienaar Miss The Chance To Become The PSL s Highest Earner?

Steven Pienaar officially completed his return to South African football when he penned in a deal with PSL champions Bidvest Wits, but did his selection in club see him miss out on the chance to become the league's highest earner? Let's take a look!

The 35-year-old will play in the Absa Premiership for the first time in 16 years, and his return to Mzansi has been met with great anticipation.

"Schillo", who first began his career with Ajax Cape Town, recently agreed to join the Clever Boys following their incredible spell last season, which saw them crowned the league champions for the first time in their history.

Twelve months ago, Mamelodi Sundowns were reportedly interested in splashing out some massive dough in order to lure Pienaar to Chloorkop, with the proposed salary figures so high that it was expected to make him the highest earner in the league.

As we know, that move didn't transpire, and a year later, it seems that he may have missed out on the chance to become the league's highest earner.

In order to become the league's top earner, Pienaar would have to earn more than R550 000 – a figure, which several Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs players are reportedly on.

It would be quite surprising if Bidvest Wits had the financial sway to beat these staggering figures, which means, management and Gavin Hunt did a good job in convincing Pienaar to take a massive pay cut in order to join a club that could very well secure more silverware this coming season.

Sure, Pienaar will definitely be earning a good living at Wits, possibly making him the highest earner at the club, but it remains highly unlikely that he is raking in over half a million Rand on the 25th of each month.

Big ups to him if he did choose a lower pay grade in order to play more regularly and compete for trophies.

Do you think Pienaar should be the highest earner in the league, or has he passed his prime?
