The story
Cape Town City FC's skillful midfielder, Fortune Makaringe, has provided an update on the injury setback he experienced during the first round of the Betway Premiership.
Makaringe suffered an ankle injury in November 2024, just a few months after joining the Western Cape side from Orlando Pirates.
The 32-year-old has made 10 appearances for The Citizens, and he made his return on Sunday in their 2-0 defeat to AmaZulu, at the very stadium where he sustained the injury.
In one of his three Instagram posts from Sunday's game, Makaringe quoted Inquoris "Inky" Johnson, a former college American football player and US motivational speaker. Inky sustained a career-ending injury in 2006 that left his right arm paralysed.
"'The purpose of being in a team sport is greater than the individual. How you want to be remembered is greater than you ,it can't be just about you,'" wrote Makaringe in quoting Inky.
"What if I decided I don't want to revisit the same place that gave me trauma? What are the odds? What am I learning from the whole experience?" added the ex-Buccaneer, who drew parallels from his last game being in Umlazi and his first game back being at the same venue.
"I guess it's all part of continuity. there's no time to be feeling sorry for ourselves. There's a lot of souls relying on our strength and courage to go through a day of optimism in their current situations," concluded Makaringe, who started in City's 1-1 draw with TS Galaxy on Wednesday night.
