The story
Bernard Parker believes that only a few people can truly grasp the pressure a professional footballer faces once they achieve success.
The TS Galaxy Diski Challenge head coach, who retired from playing in June last year, spoke to his former Kaizer Chiefs teammate Josta Dladla on how players have to become dependable to their families when they make it.
"When we become professional, we tend to inherit a lot of responsibilities, immediately. Then now, you have to give money to your uncles, you have to give money here and do this..." said Parker, emphasising the unseen pressures footballers face from family.
"Yeah you're the breadwinner now, there's nothing wrong with it but, before you were the breadwinner, you used to respect them. They used to advise you and now that you're the breadwinner, they would no longer advise you because you might cut the supply, so they can't rectify you. You think everything you are doing is right.
"So, thinking everything you are doing is right, you just continue with your behaviour and the next thing, they keep putting more pressure on you. I'm not saying it's all of us, but it's most," shared Parker on Dladla's "Izinja zeGame" podcast.
