The story
Bafana Bafana defender, Mothobi Mvala has worked hard to cement his spot as one of Masandawana's key players since joining from Highlands Park in 2020, with the 2024 calendar year proving to be one of his most successful for both club and country.
In his sit-down with Sundowns' digital magazine, Mvala opened up about his journey at the club, his 2024 highlights, and the plans he had for the festive season.
Mvala, who has struggled with injury this season, shared the lessons he's learned as part of what's widely regarded as the league's most competitive squad.
"This journey has taught me patience, as not everyone gets the chance to play. I have learned to make the most of every opportunity and to help the team keep a clean sheet, which is crucial," noted Mvala, adding:
"The friendships we have built as teammates are the best part of my time at the Club, teaching us to support each other on and off the pitch. Ultimately, I have learned to be patient and to stay driven to play in every game."
"Lord Mvala" has been living in Gauteng throughout his professional career and when asked about the cultural differences between his home town of Theunissen in the Free State compared his adopted province, Mvala simply answered:
"I have been living in Gauteng since 2013. Theunissen is a small town with no big stores or malls compared to Gauteng. Life in Gauteng is fast-paced and requires one to adapt quickly to avoid being overwhelmed.
"There is a significant distinction between the two provinces," he added, going on to mention how the crucial role his family plays in keeping him grounded.
"They play a very crucial role in my life. I know that if I do things that do not align with the lessons that my grandfather and the rest of my family taught me, I will be disappointing them.
"There are people in the township who look up to me, which means I would be disappointing them too. Everyones' support keeps me grounded.
