The story
Rising star Relebohile Mofokeng was named as the Sport Personality of the Year at the 13th edition of the annual Gauteng Sport Awards was held on Sunday at the University of Johannesburg.
The 20-year-old from Sharpeville won the award in a public vote via SMS, defeating finalists Akani Simbine, Dricus Du Plessis, Ronwen Williams, and Tatjana Smith.
Mofokeng continues to earn accolades for what was a dream first full season of professional football in the 2023/24 campaign, where he won the PSL Young Player of the Season and helped the Buccaneers win both the Nedbank Cup and MTN8.
"iPresident Yama 2k" had his award accepted by his mother, with youngster currently in Algeria with the Buccaneers ahead of their CAF Champions League opener against CR Belouizdad.
"As the mother of Relebohile, I'm very honoured to come her and receive this award for him. It's a privilege to have a son like him. Relebohile has always been respectful and humble soul. So, again, I would to thank each and everyone who voted," said Naome Mofokeng to SABC Sports' Mpumi Manyisi.
