The story
The Chiefs and Bafana Bafana legend recently discussed the reality of becoming a bread winner, when making it big as a professional athlete.
Shabba was featured on the latest episode of SuperSport Unplugged, hosted by comedian, actor and presenter Mpho Popps and sat down alongside South African sporting icons: Siya Kolisi and Bongi Msomi.
The former Glamour Boys midfielder, Kolisi and Msomi chatted about leadership and how we can inspire the next generation of South African sport stars.
Shabba touched on what being a breadwinner teaches an athlete and the countless leadership lessons:
"Once you become a breadwinner, they [family] start looking at you. Often times, even the elders, they tell you when you've gone wrong. It challenges you to be a good person. If you are a leader, yes you are the one that's chosen but you can't be an "I" person. You must always be "we", you must be selfless.
"Taking it to the game as well, even when you're not having a great time, you must still show up. When your peers are not having a good game, you must be there for them and motivate. That's a leader. A leader is also someone that is teachable, you can't be right all the time. You must acknowledge when things don't go well, you must raise your hand and take responsibility. When things go well for others, you must stand back at clap for them. That's how I define leadership," says Shabba.
