The story
Jabu Mahlangu has kicked off his venture into podcasting with "Diski Shandis" and alongside his co-host Sibusiso Mahlangu, they discussed how salaries used to look in local football during Shuffle's playing days.
Mahlangu, who garnered a cult following during his time at Kaizer Chiefs in the late 90's and early 2000s, mentioned how CAF president Patrice Motsepe changed the way players got paid in South Africa's top flight.
"We weren't getting paid in these teams before Motsepe actually invested in football, let's be honest. People would see us in Chiefs colours, or playing for Pirates, yoh guys, these people [club bosses] really held back on giving us money," said Mahlangu speaking in isiZulu on his podcast.
Mahlangu, who's yet to share a full episode of his podcast, mentioned that it's unfair for retired footballers who weren't earning a lot of money during their playing days to be blasted on shows like Mzansi Magic's "I Blew It."
"You had a salary of around R10 000 as a player and now you're on 'I Blew It' ? What is that?" questioned Mahlangu, who recalled the time when Motsepe made the declaration to pay Sundowns players more comfortable salaries.
"I remember it well, he [Motsepe] said it on a press conference once that: 'From now on, Sundowns players will be millionaires playing in South Africa,' and we though he was joking at the time. I was like: 'This guy is messing about' because I thought these other head honchos will have a problem with that. I felt that they don't want to play players what they deserve. Pay players what they deserve!" added Shuffle.
