The story

An old interview between decorated sports journalist Robert Marawa and superfan Botha Msila has gone viral on social media again, with the superfan revealing the struggles he went through to attend matches.

This interview took place in 2020 and admittedly, Botha has come a long way as a fan since then and has already has a presence outside football fandom, as he joined Mama Joy Chauke in supporting the Springboks at their triumphant Rugby World Cup campaign in France last year..

Botha is still regular face at football matches across the country, despite his beloved Bloemfontein Celtic no longer existing. For many years, many have questioned the source of his funding for such extensive travel within the country.

He's renowned for his hitch-hiking missions to numerou DStv Premiership games over a single matchweek and disclosed in his cat with Marawa on Marawa TV in 2020 that he frequently relies on contributions from players such as former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star Andile Jali; Cape Town Spurs midfielder Keagan Buchanan; and former Platinum Stars defender Tintswalo Tshabalala to finance his journeys.

That part of Msila's chat with Marawa went viral on TikTok this week, with the superfan is explaining how the aformentioned players among others, helped him fund his travels and more.

"I am doing this out of my pocket‚" he said at the time. "I am doing this out of asking from people at different stadiums.

"So many players like Tintswalo Tshabalala and Andile Jali played a role in assisting me. The most I have received is R1 100 from Andile Jali," added Botha.

"In fact‚ when Bafana was playing in Durban‚ and Jali was still playing overseas at the time‚ he asked me if I am going to the game‚ and I said yes‚ and he said I am going to send you R2 500 via eWallet for accommodation and transport," stated Botha.
