The Argentine has started only 13 games under Guardiola this season, and it appears the forward would like a more prominent role at this point in his career.
According to TyC Sports, despite joining the eight-time English champions at the beginning of the season, the 23-year-old is already open to leaving the Etihad Stadium and making his way to the Camp Nou.
Barcelona are also rumoured to be in the market for a successor for 34-year-old Robert Lewandowski.
While the Poland marksman continues to find the back of the net at a world-class rate in spite of his age, the Blaugrana seem to already be planning for the future.
The Catalan giants are still suffering economically and, as a result, are unlikely to make an official bid for Alvarez, but are reportedly hoping a loan deal for the forward can be negotiated with the reigning Premier League champions.
