Basomboli's introduction as a second half substitute on Sunday proved a master stroke by coach Arthur Zwane. His introduction came with much anticipation and to a degree, he managed to deliver as Chiefs managed to end their three-match winless streak.
Here are five things we learnt about Chiefs' Christian Saile Basomboli:
He is aggressive in his press
Before he even kicked a ball for Chiefs, Zwane had spoken glowingly about Basomboli's ability to press opposition defences aggressively. In the time he spent on the pitch, he displayed that in patches and looked hungry to prove a point. It was vital for the 22-year-old to impress the home fans on debut – something he managed with aplomb.
Could make Du Preez/ Bimenyimana better players
Before Basomboli's debut, Ashley Du Preez had not scored a goal in five matches, however, the Congolese striker with his first few touches in a Chiefs shirt managed to tee up his strike partner to slot home the second goal in a much-needed 2-0 win for Chiefs over Royal AM. While he hasn't played alongside Chiefs' Bimenyimana, indications are that he is capable of forming a lethal partnership with either of Chiefs strikers in the coming matches.
Better suited to the right as opposed to CF?
From the time he was introduced in the 56th minute, Basomboli drifted to the right-hand side of Chiefs' attack. It was from this position that he managed to get register an assist on debut. Early indications are that he could be better suited to playing from the right as he has shown the ability to cut in and take a shot on goal with his weaker left foot. Chiefs could potentially form a new attacking trident made up of Basomboli, Du Preez and Bimenyimana, although we are yet to see him deployed as a number nine.
Possesses speed for his size
Despite his lanky frame, Basomboli has displayed a decent change of pace and packs the skill to go along with it. Boosted by the jubilant Chiefs fans, the striker's confidence grew in the second half, and he utilized this to take on his full back and draw vital fouls to wind down the clock as Chiefs managed to secure a victory.
One assist already, goals soon to follow?
Basomboli is fresh from a seven-goal spell at Nchanga Rangers before he joined Chiefs and managed to get into double figures with 19 goals in the 2021/22 season, which speaks of a striker who is no stranger to finding the back of the net. Having started his Chiefs career with a bang, it appears that it's only a matter of time before he finds his first in Chiefs colours.
