It has been explained how Catalan police reportedly "tricked" Dani Alves into handing himself into custody after being accused of sexual assault in Spain earlier this month.
Dani Alves Moved To Different Prison For 'His Own Protection'
When news in Spain broke that the legendary Brazilian footballer had been accused of sexual assault, Alves was already back in Mexico with UNAM Pumas following a trip to Barcelona in December.
He returned to the Spanish city of his own accord earlier this month to give police his version of events, but was reportedly duped by the Mossos d'Esquadra (the Catalonian police), who deliberately kept the seriousness of the accusations quiet, according to Marca.
Alves was testifying in response to a "sexual assault" before it emerged that he had, in fact, been accused of rape by a woman he was believed to have encountered in a Barcelona nightclub on 30 December.
This allowed for the Catalan police to get the player to return to Spain without fuss, with the 39-year-old currently behind bars awaiting a verdict.
Reports suggest that the victim's statements, as well as the statements of witnesses who were in attendance at the nightclub at the time the incident occurred, have had no inconsistencies, unlike the footballer's version of what happened that night.
Alves has reportedly contradicted himself with his account of events after initially saying he did not know the woman accusing him of rape and then later claiming their relations were completely consensual.
Ex-Wife Comes Out In Support Of Arrested Alves
Pumas terminated the ex-Barca right-back's contract amid the allegations he is facing and after the court believed they had enough evidence to detain him until further notice.
