Title Race Open? Man Utd Secure Derby Comeback Win

Erik ten Hag secured his first win in the Manchester derby after Manchester United rallied from behind to defeat Manchester City 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Premier League

Result: Manchester United 2-1 Manchester City

Date: 14 January 2023

Venue: Old Trafford

Erik Ten Hag recalled Fred, Anthony Martial, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro after the Carabao Cup, as Antony and Lisandro Martinez were back among the substiutes.

City, meanwhile, made eight changes from the Carabao Cup exit at Southampton, which included Haaland, Foden who both scored hat-tricks against United at the Etihad earlier in the season.

United had their first opening on 10 minutes after a poor pass from Bernardo Silva led to Eriksen playing in Bruno Fernandes, who dragged his effort wide of the mark.

The game's first clear-cut chance fell to United on 34 minutes when Rashford latched onto a ball over the top and beat the on-rushing Ederson, but his strike was kept out by Kyle Walker.

Rashford was presented with another chance three minutes later after being slipped in by Eriksen but after a heavy touch he was thwarted by Ederson.

Ten Hag made a switch at the start of the second half, with Anthony Martial making away for Antony who had scored in his last two games for the club.

Pep Guardiola looked to his bench just before the hour mark as Jack Grealish replaced Foden, a decision which paid a minute later when the Englishman nodded home de Bruyne's cross for the opening goal.

Ten Hag responded by throwing on the young Alejandro Garnacho for the final 17 minutes, with Eriksen making way as the home side pushed for an equaliser.

United got their reward in the 79th minute when Bruno Fernandes latched onto a through-ball from Casemiro before placing the ball into the far corner.

The turnaround was complete with eight minutes left to play as Fernandes spread the ball out to Garnacho, who turned his marker to pick out Rashford for the close-range finish.
City threw bodies forward in search of an equalising goal, but United defended with everybody back and held on for their ninth straight victory.
