Patrick Mabedi was a stalwart of Kaizer Chiefs defence from 1998 to 2006. 'Bostik' weathered all number of storms in the centre of Amakhosi's defence. How does he feel Chiefs will cope after losing their captain and PSL Player of the Season, Tefu Mashamaite, and will Siyanda Xulu be a suitable replacement for 'Masha'? Read on to find out…
Soccer Laduma: Mr Mabedi, Siyanda Xulu has joined Kaizer Chiefs. What do you make of the move?
Patrick Mabedi: I think it's a good move for both the club and the player. He started his career at Chiefs and he knows the culture. Now he has the experience to play for a big team like Chiefs as he is coming from Europe.
SL: Do you think he will fit comfortably into the backline of the team and fill the gap left by Tefu Mashamaite?
PM:I think he can. You know, obviously it won't be easy because Tefu did very well last season but, as I said, he has gained experience in Europe which will help him fill the big shoes of Tefu.
SL: Why do you think it is South African players often don't spend longer periods in Europe?
PM: That's a hard one to say because different players have different reasons, but I think the main one is lack of mental strength. I also wonder why South African players these days can't survive in Europe, because players like Lucas Radebe, Benni McCarthy and Phil Masinga did. It could also be about the money. Players are getting well paid in South Africa now and they would rather play at home than in Europe and still get paid well. But, above all, it's about being home sick.
SL: Will Xulu's chances of Bafana Bafana call-ups be greater now that he is playing in the PSL?
PM:Sometimes it's good to play at home because the national team coach watches you week in week out, so I think that will help him increase his chances for Bafana Bafana.
SL: Patrick, thank you very much for your time.
PM:You are welcome.
