Orlando Pirates sensation Monnapule Saleng is believed to have attracted interest from abroad, with a Danish top-flight club monitoring the winger. The Siya crew has been led to believe that Odense BK have asked questions about the Bafana Bafana international, but no formal approach has been made as yet to the player or his parent club. Saleng dazzled in the DStv Premiership for the Buccaneers last season after he was brought back from a loan spell at Soweto neighbours Moroka Swallows for then new coach Jose Riveiro to have a look.
It took some time for the Spanish mentor to put his faith in the 25-year-old, who did not feature for Pirates until after eight league matches. And when he did… Saleng was unstoppable, with an overall 30 games, 15 goals and 11 assists to be nominated for the Footballer of the Season award alongside the Mamelodi Sundowns duo of midfielder Teboho Mokoena as well as goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Mokoena got the accolade, but Saleng was voted Players' Player of the Season by the rest of his peers in the Premier Soccer League. Soccer Laduma understands that Odense, who are a top-tier outfit in the Danish Super League, have put the skillful winger on their radar – but given that he remains contracted to the Soweto giants, there would be a hefty transfer fee involved to get him out.
Saleng is also earmarking a place in the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in January next year, and that could attract more suitors.
