Orlando Pirates will be monitoring the progress of Lehlohonolo Mtshali in the DStv Premiership this season, sources have informed the Siya crew. Last season, it was reported by this publication that there had been talks of the player possibly going back to the Houghton-based outfit. It was, after all, there where he had the first taste of professional football after he graduated from the club's development ranks as a 22-year-old.
While he was praised as the next big star, the defensive midfielder didn't have it easy in commanding a place in the starting line-up due to injuries and was subsequently loaned to Jomo Cosmos, before being eventually signed by Ezenkosi on a permanent deal.
The 2022/23 season saw Mtshali emerging as one of the top performers in the Motsepe Foundation Championship while playing for All Stars FC, who were eventually sold to Black Leopards at the end of the campaign. Bucs had been alerted to the player's resurgence and appeared to be interested according to sources, although it was Sekhukhune United who snatched the 28-year-old ahead of 2023/24.
"Lehlohonolo Mtshali has made huge progress from the training ground at Sekhukhune United and had been on course to making his first appearance for his new team when the FIFA international break came. He had started making the matchday squads and will aim to build on that when the season resumes," revealed a source.
"He was one of the best players for his position in the NFD (second tier) last season while playing for All Stars and there was a lot of interest in his services. Pirates will be monitoring his progress with a possibility for him to return to the club that he made his professional debut with," added the source.
