The Confederation of African Football (CAF), in one of their resolutions, recently decreed that the Secretary Generals of all their six zonal organizations would have to be directly employed and paid by the continental body.
Soccer Laduma also picked up information that an age limit will be applied for the incumbent to be allowed to stay in the employ of the zonal organization, sending panic across the continent, including the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA).
The Siya crew was informed that due to the new rule, COSAFA CEO Sue Destombes, a competent administrator that has successfully run the Southern African region and turned it into the most active across the continent since inception, might be affected.
According to our source, CAF ruled two years ago that the CEOs of all the zonal organizations will have to step down once they reach the age of 62.
"I can confirm that such a rule does exist," said West African Football Union (WAFU) B zonal SG, Balima Boureima.
"CAF feels that after 60 years, the SG of every zone has to go into retirement. I am also stepping down because I'm over 60 years," he added.
Lux September, the head of CAF TV Broadcasting and Commercial, confirmed that the continental organization has indeed passed resolutions that CEOs of all the zones will have to work closely with CAF and would, in turn, be paid by the organization.
According to Siya sources, CAF wants to professionalize the zones and ensure that all the six zones are in sync with the continental organization, hence the latest developments regarding the CEOs. However, according to September, it was the prerogative of the zones whether they enforced the age restriction or ignored it, and CAF will not get involved in that area.
