It appears that Carnell's waiting period, where he could study the league, assemble a formidable team and navigate the waters that is the MLS has paid off!
Not only was his record-breaking St Louis City side crowned Western conference champions - but Carnell has landed a major individual award too.
The 46-year-old was named the Coach of the Year in the MLS.
He broke a number of records enroute to this achievement, some of which include: becoming the first expansion team to win their first five games, becoming the fastest expansion side to reach 25 points, breaking the expansion record for most wins in a season, becoming the first expansion team to win a conference championship - and they became just the second team to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup in their first year.
Reacting to his incredible achievement, Carnell couldn't hide his excitement over his whirlwind first eight months.
"There's nothing more you could have wished for, for the growth of this club in its first eight months. I'm hopeful for now and many months to come and hopefully many years," he told the club's media department.
