Papic: This Football Is Boring

Papic: This Football Is Boring

Orlando Pirates winning five trophies in just over two seasons has opened a debate on who is the greatest coach ever at the club, pitting Jose Riveiro against the likes of Ruud Krol. However, Kosta Papic has suggested that he was way ahead of time in the 'Happy People' era.

Riveiro became the first coach to win three consecutive MTN8 trophies in the PSL era, as he added to the cup doubles of the previous two campaigns.

The current Pirates team under the Spaniard is starting to draw comparisons with the double-treble era of the 2010/11 and 2011/12, although the current squad is still short of a league title.

One of the celebrated coaches at the Buccaneers, Kosta Papic, whose era at the club between 2004 and 2006 is still hailed, even though they did not win any trophy, says the football being played currently across the globe is 'boring' and he can't even watch it.

"This football is boring, I cannot watch this football. What is missing? So many things. Just one thing, 70 percent of the ball going backwards, a defender staying between 15 and 20 metres [to his own goal]. You see the whole team of the opponent, every match, everybody who is playing," Papic said on 947's MSW.

"What is that? What kind of football is that? The defender of [the opposition] starts attacking in the half of the opponent. What is going on now? Ten against ten in a half pitch, what kind of football is that?

"I mean, if that's modern football, I don't have a problem. It's missing responsibility, self confidence, and many things. Real Madrid when two players receive the ball, they are in the attacking side, if it's not these two guys receiving the ball, they are going to play around, play around. Is that football? I like it to hear younger guys saying this is modern football, but let's find out what happened in 1974, '76, '78. I watched a 1976 game on YouTube, I couldn't believe it, they are running like hell, fighting like hell, the result is 4-3, that is the football!," the Serbian coach added.

The 'Happy people' era at Pirates had a greatly assembled squad, with players such as Steve Lekoelea, Joseph Makhanya, Lebohang Mokoena, Sailor Tshabalala, Thapelo Liau, Eddie Dinha, Lucky Lekgwathi, the late Gift Leremi and Benedict Vilakazi, among others.
