Nedbank Cup Report: Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila v Swallows 26 February 2021

Result: Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila 2-2 Swallows (TTM win 4-3 on penalties)

Date: 26 February 2021

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Tshakhuma Tsha Tsha Madzivhandila continued their resurgent run after defeating Swallows FC on penalties to advance to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals.

Swallows made wholesale changes, with only Given Thibedi, Vuyo Mere, Kgaogelo Sekgota and Njabulo Ngcobo retaining their places while TTM made four changes, with Mogakolodi Ngele, Rhulani Manzini, Celimpilo Ngema and Edgar Manaka all recalled.

Thabo Mnyamane gave Vhadau Vha Damani the lead in the 18th minute with a stunning free-kick from just outside the box that found the top corner, with goalkeeper Virgil Vries left flat-footed.

Lehlohono Nonyane came close to doubling TTM's lead seven minutes before the break with a looping header from the edge of the box that came off the top of the far post.

Sipho Sibiya levelled matters for the Birds on the stroke of half-time with a diving header inside the box after a cross by Joseph Mhlongo.

Manzini gave the hosts a perfect start in the second stanza as he restored their lead seven minutes from the break after getting on the end of Ngele's cross to head home at the far post.

With Swallows knocking on the door for the equaliser, Vuyo Mere restored parity in the last quarter of an hour with a volley from close range at the near post after a rebound inside the box from a cross.

The game was on the edge in the closing period and Sekgota came very close to snatching the winner for Brandon Truter's charges in stoppage time with a first-time strike at the near post that missed wide from a cross and the match went to extra-time after there was no winner in regulation time.

TTM had a big chance to go 3-2 up in the 15th minute of extra-time after Sifiso Hlanti conceded a penalty by bringing down Joseph Malongoane in the box, but Meshack Maphangule's spot-kick was saved by Vries which sent the game to a shoot-out.

Arubi was the hero in the shoout-out, as he saved two spot-kicks, as TTM advanced to the quarter-finals with a 4-3 win while Swallows lose their first game in all competitions this season, although they remain unbeaten in the DStv Premiership.
