Venue: Emirates Airline Park
TS Galaxy were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by GladAfrica Championship side TS Sporting after penalty shoot-out loss at Emirates Airline Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Rockets made five changes from their thumping win over Black Leopards, as Spiwe Msimangi and Tshegofatso Nyama were both recalled alongside rare starts for Nation Ndlovu, Sihle Ndluli and Felix Badenhorst.
Owen Da Gama's charges were forceful in the early exchanges as Nyama had a good chance to give them the lead in the 18th minute after he was setup by Masilake Phohlongo inside the box but he failed to hit the target.
Badenhorst thought he had finally got the opener for Galaxy two minutes later after converting Phohlongo's cross but the goal was disallowed as the ball went out of play in the build-up.
Phohlongo and Badenhorst combined again for the Rockets on the stroke of half-time with the former whipping in a teasing free-kick inside the box but the latter's header missed wide and Sporting survived as the first stanza ended goalless.
Abantu Bemthetho had a better resistance coming from the break, denying Galaxy chances and in the last 20 minutes they brought on the experience of Kulegani Madondo in place of Sibongakonke Mbatha.
However, Mbulelo Wambi had a great chance to net the winner for Da Gama's charges in the last seven minutes but he was denied by shot-stopper Abram Ngcobo.
Sporting were reduced to ten men in the last minute after Humphrey Khoza was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Wayde Lekay but Abantu Bemthetho held on in the end to force the game to extra-time.
Mxolisi Macuphu had a wonderful chance to break the deadlock for Galaxy in the eighth minute of extra-time after a cross inside the box but his headed effort was saved by Ngcobo.
However, neither side could find the breakthrough in extra-time, sending the to penalties where Sporting went on to win 5-4 after Mlungisi Mbunjana's first penalty for Galaxy was saved by Ngcobo.
