Sekhukhune Progress In Nedbank Cup After Sinking CT City

Sekhukhune United progressed to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after beating Cape Town City 2-0 on Monday evening.

Result: Sekhukhune United 2-0 Cape Town City

Date: 27 January 2025

Venue: Old Peter Mokaba Stadium

Sekhukhune recalled former Orlando Pirates midfielder Thabang Monare and Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Sipho Mbule, who both did not start in a narrow defeat to Kaizer Chiefs.

The Citizens, meanwhile, were also boosted by the return of Thamsanqa Mkhize, Haashim Domingo and Darwin Gonzalez following their win over Richards Bay.

The sides struggled to build any sort of rhythm in the early exchanges, with chances few and far between.

Monare came the closest to breaking the deadlock for Babina Noko just before the half-hour mark with a thumping shot that missed narrowly wide.

City were content to absorb the pressure in the latter phase of the first stanza but they did not get counter-attack opportunities as the first stanza did not produce any goals.

Muhsin Ertugral made a goalkeeping change at half-time as Elson Sithole replaced the experienced Darren Keet due to injury.

The change was unfortunate for City as just before the hour-mark Pirates loanee broke the deadlock with a curling shot that looped just over the fingertips of Sithole.

The Mother City outfit needed spark going forward and the Turkish coach made an attacking change as Jody Ahshene replaced Domingo.

The visitors, however, struggled to get out of their own half and with 20 minutes remaining, Relebogile Mokhuoane doubled the lead for Lehlohonolo Seema's charges with a glancing header at the near post from a corner by Mbule.

Sekhukhune slowed down the tempo of the game in the dying minutes and City had no response, as the Limpopo side booked their spot in the last 16.

Here's how they lined up:

Sekhukhune United: Sangare, Rammala, Mohamme, Mkhabela, Cardoso, Monare, Mokhuoane, Otladisa, Mbule, Boyeli, Mokoena

Subs: Kazapua, Mahlangu, Langa, Mkhize, Mncube, Makgalwa, Ohizu, Sihlali, Sithole

Cape Town City: Keet, Mkhize, Gordinho, Iduma, Nyama, Petrus, Nodada, Mokotjo, Domingo, Tjiueza, Darwin

Subs: Sithole, Amato, April, Fisher, Ah Shene, Rhodes, Ziba, Dondolo, Sereetsi
