Nedbank Cup Report: Chippa United v Cape Town City 28 February 2021

Result: Chippa United 2-1 Cape Town City

Date: 28 February 2021

Venue: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Chippa United needed extra-time to claim a 2-1 victory over Cape Town City FC for a spot in the Nedbank Cup last eight on Sunday evening.

City coach Jan Olde Riekerink made three changes to his starting lineup with Abubaker Mobara, Terrence Mahego and Tashreeq Morris coming into the side. Meanwhile, Sibusiso Mthethwa and Augustine Kwem came into Dan Malesela's starting XI.

Chippa suffered an early blow when defender Frederic Nsabiyumva was stretchered off and replaced by Avela Cezu.

In the fourth minute, Kwem found himself through on goal but was denied by an excellent last-ditch intervention by Craig Martin.

City had the first opportunity of the match. Chippa tried to play out the back but were almost punished as Mduduzi Mdantsane fired narrowly wide after the visitors had the won ball back in a promising position.

The impressive Kwem opened the scoring in the 27th minute, finishing clinically into the keeper's bottom left after Mokhele Maloisane had cut inside well and released the striker with a throughball.

In the 38th minute, Chilli Boys shot-stopper Ayanda Mtshali made a good save to deny Mdantsane at point blank range. Soon after, Morris rounded Mtshali but his effort was brilliantly cleared off the line by Mobara.

Olde Riekerink was obviously not happy with his side's first-half display and made three changes at the interval with Justin Shonga coming on for Lakay, Keanu Cupido coming on for Terrence Mashego and Nigerian Abdul Ajagun replacing Thato Mokeke for his debut.

The Citizens got the equaliser in the 66th minute. The corner was delivered by Bradley Ralani and Keanu Cupido couldn't clear adequately with the ball falling to the debutant Ajagun a debut goal with a close-range finish.

That would send the game to extra-time. Additional time came to life in the 115th minute when Thami Mkhize put the ball on a plate for Shonga, whose header from the right side of the six yard box was close, but missed to the right.

Moments later, the Chilli Boys snatched it with the winner with just four minutes of stoppage time remaining. Bienvenu Eva Nga, on as a substitute for Anthony Laffor, slotted the ball home from close-range after Andile Mbenyane did some sterling work down the right-hand side.
