Nedbank Cup Report: Baroka v Cape Town Spurs

Nedbank Cup Report: Baroka v Cape Town Spurs

Result: Baroka FC 1-1 Cape Town Spurs (Spurs won 5-4 on penalties)

Date: 08 February 2021

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Baroka FC crashed out of the Nedbank Cup in the first round after losing to GladAfrica Championship side Cape Town Spurs on penalties.

Spurs started 18-year-old goalkeeper Lincoln Vyver, while Osacrine Maluleke, Ananias Gebhardt and Bonginkosi Makume were the only survivors from Baroka's 1-1 draw against Cape Town City.

Abednego Mosiatlhage fancied the travelling side's first opening with a darting run towards the centre of the area from out wide early on, but in the end fired off target.

The threats from Spurs didn't stop there as a low shot from range by Lucky Khumalo a little later forced goalkeeper Masuluke to palm away.

It continued late in half as a towering header in the centre of the area from Thendo Mukumela produced an acrobatic save from Masuluke.

For all their endeavour, Spurs trailed on the brink of halftime when Richard Mbulu volleyed in a flick-on from a right-sided throw-in.

Bakgaga Ba Ga Mphahlele made two changes ahead of the second half, with Thuso Mogale in for Leonardo Affonso and Nhlanhla Mgaga in for Delite Ntemane.

The lead was cancelled out on 60 minutes when Ashley Cupido side-footed a cross-field delivery from the left by Cohen Stander into the bottom-corner.

Spurs should've completed the comeback midway in the second half from a mazy run in the area by Chumani Butsaka, but was denied by Masuluke.

It was all Spurs in the closing minutes with Masuluke pushing a powerful long-range strike from Mukumela to safety, as the tie entered extra-time.

Masuluke continued to frustrate Mukumela with a point-blank save from a clear chance in the first half of extra-time, as Joslin Kamatuka fluffed a similar opening late on as a shoot-out followed.

Following a lengthy shoot-out, Spurs advanced to the last 16 with Riyaad Koopstadt converting the final kick after Baroka missed two of theirs.
