Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, who made history in 2009 by leading Golden Arrows to MTN8 glory with a resounding 6-0 win over Ajax Cape Town, is setting his sights on another milestone.
As the MTN8 tournament kicks off this weekend, Mngqithi is aiming to become the first coach to win the newly increased prize of R10 million. In a detailed interview with Soccer Laduma, Mngqithi expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge and his ambition to replicate his past success under the new tournament stakes.

"Its more exciting for me because I was the first one to win it (the old prize money). Now, they have improved the money and maybe the football gods will be with me me again to win it as the first one again when it's R10 million and that's what is exciting for me," Mngqithi told the Siya crew.

Reflecting on his previous triumph and the significance of being part of the season's opening tournament, Mngqithi highlighted the strategic and motivational advantages it offers.
"For me I am just a coach who wants to win every match and winning the tournament will be good of course. The first MTN8 win was the biggest with 11 goals in four matches and we only conceded one goal with Golden Arrows which is considered a smaller team. Now I am with Sundowns with a good number of resources and we need to do well and win this tournament," Mngqithi observed.
Sundowns, who were the runners-up last season, are set to begin their MTN8 campaign against Polokwane City on August 11th at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria. With a blend of resourcefulness and a seasoned approach, Mngqithi is poised to steer his team toward seizing the elevated prize, underscoring his enduring legacy as a coach who thrives on achieving and setting new benchmarks in South African football.
