Matthews: In Demand Downs Duo Will Never Be Sold!

There has been talk about possible European moves for Mamelodi Sundowns duo Teboho Mokoena and Thapelo Maseko - but SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed why it is unlikely to happen.

Following their AFCON heroics with Bafana Bafana, both Maseko and Mokoena are believed to have attracted interest from Europe, as reported by the Siya crew.

There were similar talks about possible moves for the players whilst they were on the books of SuperSport United; however, none materialized and they were subsequently sold to Matsatsantsa's cross-town rivals, both for mammoth transfer fees.

But according to their former CEO, the duo's chances of securing European moves are slim owing to Sundowns' penchant of holding onto their best players.

"Well, you know I said when Maseko went to Sundowns, if Barcelona came to buy him, Sundowns wouldn't sell," he told the Siya crew at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility.

"And it's not quite Barcelona but you know, Teboho Mokoena today has many interested suitors from Europe and he's not going to get sold. So it's up to a player.

"If a player is happy to stay in South Africa for his career, then a move to the big three makes a lot of sense. If a player wants to go and play in Europe, which of those big three are going to sell him? And that's what the player needs to answer that question.

"Me, I'm looking for the best price. I'm looking for the best deal that I can reinvest in my club, that I can get other players, that I can remain competitive, just like we've remained competitive. We sold Masangwanyi, we sold Maseko, but there we are, we're still in the top four, we're still boxing hard and we're still producing youngsters.

"I've got another 10 coming through the club. Our production line at the moment is extremely strong and we aim to continue to produce good young players and definitely over time we'll be moving those players on, hopefully to Europe," he said.
