Modiba: How Downs 'Nullified' CAF Confed Cup Semi-Finalists

Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Aubrey Modiba opened up on the challenges they faced against Marumo Gallants and how they applied the lessons they learned from throwing away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 with AmaZulu.

Sundowns kept their hopes of breaking their own record of 71 points set in the 2015-16 season under former coach Pitso Mosimane alive after getting back to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Gallants over the weekend.

Sundowns scored the fastest goal of the season after Thapelo Morena opened the scoring within 25 seconds and Themba Zwane got the second goal early in the second stanza to settle the nerves.

Bahlabane Ba Ntwa, despite reaching the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup, are still in danger of relegation in the DStv Premiership and Modiba explained that they expected a tough game because of those two factors.

"I think they were fighting for their lives, you could see, they were throwing numbers in front, I'm just happy that we got the clean-sheet and we won the game and hopefully we can take this to the next game," Modiba told Sundowns media.

"We expected a very tough game, aggressive because they are playing CAF Confederation Cup, there there's physicality, crosses into the box, we needed to deal with that.

"And obviously the big striker like (Ranga) Chivaviro, we needed to contain him and I think our defenders did pretty well in terms of that, to nullify those chances and we were able to contain them," he said.

The former SuperSport United versatile player went on and explained that they were not happy with squandering a two-goal lead in the previous game to draw 2-2 with Usuthu and they watched the game again to rectify their mistakes.

"We were very disappointed with the previous game against AmaZulu, we scored two goals and we conceded another two goals, we were very disappointed with that, we went (back) to our drawing board, we watched the game again," Modiba continued.

"And we took the positives from that game because we played very well. It's just that we didn't get the result that we wanted. Coming to this game (against Gallants) we knew very well that you can score one or two goals, you can't go to sleep, you need to get more goals and defend well, I'm happy we did that," he added.

Sundowns will travel to Wydad Casablanca on Saturday in the CAF Champions League semi-final first-leg.
