Mamelodi Sundowns are believed to have forked out R12 million for the signing of midfield talisman Junior Mendieta.
The Siya crew had earlier reported that Stellenbosch FC had put a figure of around R10 million as his buy-out clause following rumours that Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates were keen on his services.
But Downs moved swiftly, identifying Mendieta as a priority target after parting ways with attacker Haashim Domingo at the start of last month. Domingo has since joined Raja Casablanca in Morocco on a two-year deal to begin life with the North African powerhouse.
The Brazilians are establishing a reputation as the big-money spenders in the Premier Soccer League – it's not the first time they are paying huge sums for a player to cross over to Chloorkop. During the 2022/23 season, coach Steve Barker was adamant Stellies would not be selling their best players in an attempt to build consistency having again finished in the Top Eight in the league.
But money talks.
It's been reported that Mendieta has put pen to paper on a four-year contract and the likelihood is that the Argentine midfielder is on a handsome package to go along with the long-term deal he has signed.
Mendieta was a star performer for the side from the Winelands throughout the campaign, featuring in 31 matches in all competitions and scoring 10 goals as well as adding nine assists.
Sundowns felt he was worth breaking the bank for.
