Teko Reveals Big Chiefs Regret

With Kaizer Chiefs no longer getting the cream of the crop in signing players of late, legend Teko Modise's revelations casts questions on management.

Chiefs have not been able to maintain their standards of recruiting the best players in the country, since former coach Stuart Baxter left the club in 2015.

The Glamour Boys always had arguably the best players and could spot and recruit talented and rough diamonds, who went to achieve great things, especially up to late 2000s.

After reports that Amakhosi missed the chance to sign Relebohile Mofokeng as an unknown youngsters, after they were the first to be recommended the Sharpeville native forward.

Modise has revealed that he would have preferred to play for Chiefs, who initially showed interest while he was still in the early years of his professional career at the National First Division but they did not live up to the promise they made to sign him and that pain made it easier for him to choose Pirates, when an opportunity came to join a big team from SuperSport United.

"Irvin Khoza sold me the story of joining Orlando Pirates, it was an easy decision but not because I can't say no. I could have went to Chiefs if it (the opportunity) came earlier (than Pirates)," Modise revealed on Izinja zeGame podcast with Josta Dladla.

"After the first season of me playing in Mvela (National First Division) Bobby (Motaung) called me personally and said 'I want you to play for Chiefs' and I said 'I'm ready when you are' but for five, six years they (Chiefs) never came through. That's why I started disliking Chiefs.

"I knew number ten jersey was waiting for me at Chiefs, I knew I could do better (than Chiefs players at the time), so imagine my performances in a Pirates jersey and put it at Chiefs...The first club I got introduced to as a kid was Kaizer Chiefs, my idol (Doctor Khumalo) played for Kaizer Chiefs, I wanted to play for Kaizer Chiefs. I didn't care how much money I was going to earn," Modise added.

Amakhosi, however, have managed to unearth some of the best youngsters in the country, although their scouting has let them down over the last decade or so.
