'Downs Miss Zwane, Chiefs Need A Player Like Him'

'Downs Miss Zwane, Chiefs Need A Player Like Him'

Even though Kaizer Chiefs won on Wednesday evening, there are Amakhosi critics who believe the team needs to score more goals, and the club's former assistant Farouk Khan discusses where they still need to improve.

Although many attribute the issue to the strikers, speaking exclusively to Soccer Laduma, Khan believes the team is missing a crucial element in their midfield.

Khan emphasized the importance of having a "conductor" in the midfield—a key player who orchestrates the game and coordinates team movement. He noted that this component is currently lacking at Chiefs.

"For me Chiefs have almost all the players they need in the team. There is only one missing piece in the puzzle and it's the conductor. You see a player like Themba Zwane at Mamelodi Sundowns or Patrick Maswanganyi at Orlando Pirates. We used to have Thabo Mooki, Doctor Khumalo or Scara Ngobese. You don't buy such players. You develop them," Khan told the Siya crew.

"If Chiefs can develop such a player or find one from their development, that would really help the team a lot. Nothing much needs to change at Chiefs except finding that conductor for the midfield," Khan observed.

Khan, who heads the Stars of Africa Academy, also provided insights into Sundowns' current struggles.

"Sundowns have a lot of talented players but things are not going very well for them now since Themba Zwane got injured. He is their conductor. Every team needs a conductor. He is the one who helps the team gel from defence to attack and once he is not there you can see the difference. That's what Chiefs are missing in their squad right now," Khan told Soccer Laduma.

Amakhosi beat Richards Bay 2-1 in PSL action on Wednesday, even though they were hampered by having to play with 10 men in the second half.

As Chiefs continue their campaign, the search for a midfield maestro could hold the key to unlocking their full potential. Finding or developing a player who can dictate the tempo and link up play might not only bolster their attacking exploits but also pave the way for a more cohesive team performance.

Certain pundits would say the signing of Gaston Sirino from the beginning of this season, to a certain extent will help Amakhosi improve in this regard. Interestingly, Sirino didn't feature in the victory against Richards Bay. He was meant to come on in the second half if it wasn't for the red card to Reeve Frosler.

The Siya has reported how Chiefs are looking for a new striker and a wide attacking forward.
