The story

SuperSport United recorded their first DStv Premiership win of 2024 when they outlasted Royal AM, 1-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening, rising to fifth in the league standings.

Matsatsantsa clinched the win with a late goal courtesy of substitute, veteran striker Bradley Grobler, ending a streak of 10 matches without a victory in the league, dating back to December of last year.

Although Grobler grabbed the all-important winner, the Man of the Match award went the way of fullback Lyle Lakay, who dedicated it to Gavin Hunt's late father, Martin.

"I would like to dedicate this award to the coach. I think everybody knows what happened, his father passed away. Personally, I started with him 15 years ago, and I've never seen him that emotional and I'd like to dedicate this award to him," said Lakay in his post-match interview.

"I've actually lost both my parents in the same year, it's been incredibly difficult. The funeral is on Friday, which will be another tough day. This is something everyone faces, but it doesn't make it any easier when it happens to you. It was a shock, My dad was my biggest supporter, and he had been sick for the past four weeks," Hunt told journalist Robin-Duke Madlala from Sports Wire.

Hunt, a veteran coach approaching 1,000 matches in the PSL top flight with a collection of trophies to his name, acknowledged the significant role his father, a former footballer himself, played in his coaching journey.

"He understood the game and wasn't afraid to be critical. He'd always point out my mistakes and jokingly ask when I'd get a real job! He knew his football, and perhaps that's why I made some changes against Royal AM. We hadn't won since he fell ill, and he'd been offering advice for those four weeks," added Hunt in his chat with Madlala.
