The story

Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs cult hero Jabu Mahlangu is continuing on his podcasting journey and recently shared his experiences in coming into financial difficulties, revealing just how much pressure he was under financially when his broke through at Chiefs..

The 43-year-old alongside his "Diski Shandis" co-host, Sibusiso Mahlangu, also spoke about how much they made during their professional playing days, as well as the importance of spending money wisely, especially while you are high-earning baller.

"Shuffle" touched on how it was normal for players to make major purchases like buying car and have it eat away half of their monthly salaries, among other things.

Mahlangu recalls when he was promoted to the Amakhosi first team in 1999 as a teenager and how difficult it was for him to be the breadwinner.

He revealed that he was being paid a meagre monthly salary of around R6 000 Gross, and an estimate of R4.5k after Tax:

"Yes it wasn't much at that time but someone else could say, at that age, R6k is a lot of money. Yes it is a lot of money at that age but for me, there's black tax. I'm a black person, eKasi, I have family members that I have to consider in that R4.5k I bring in after Tax, because it's a given that the Tax man will take something.

"You look at the home situation, it's tough. You have an aunt with children, and it's difficult because she's not working. So, this R4.5k needs to accommodate the whole family, including myself because it's my money that I worked for," shared Shuffle.

"Automatically, I had stress. I was happy to have signed my contract at Chiefs. I worked very hard to get that professional contract, there was no favours, I worked hard. I soon as I entered the first team, a host of problems arise that were too overwhelming," he added.
