Ertugral: Trust In Football Is An Illusion

The story

A couple of weeks after Cape Town City FC parted ways with Muhsin Ertugral, the experienced coach shared his thoughts on why many club decisions are placed in the hands of coaches and how the modern game often operates in absolutes.

Ertugral, who served as the club's technical director and interim head coach, left City after just three months. He had joined the club in January 2025 to replace Eric Tinkler.

During his time at Cape Town City, Ertugral managed 13 league matches, recording three wins, three draws, and seven losses. The Western-Cape side also faced defeat in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 against Sekhukhune United under his leadership.

In a lengthy Instagram post, the ex-Türkiye National men's team technical advisor touched on the "The Illusion of Change" and the realities for coaches in football today.

"Football is a game of movement, often the biggest decisions are made in cycles repeating the past, expecting a different future. A coach change in mid season is not to build, but to repair," said Ertugral, who has left at least three of his PSL posts (Ajax Cape Town, Maritzburg United and Pirates) in the middle of a campaign.

"Not to shape a vision, for sure to stabilize the chaos. It is a continuation of a story already written surely filled with silent conflicts, unseen tensions, and a culture that existed before you stepped in the room.

"Trust, for me is an illusion in football business. The ones who were there before were they fighting against the problems, or were they simply just surviving within it? In team sport I feel familiarity feels safe, but safety rarely brings change what's needed.

Football today speaks in absolutes! Win or lose, success or failure, in or out. But for me, after all those years in pro football, reality is played in the 'in between,' shared the 65-year-old.

Muhsin, who could be using his short stint at City as a recent example, feels that coaches tend to be scapegoated and that a club's success or failure should not hinge on one person or appointment.

"Blame will always move downward, never upward. Main Decisions come from the top, but when the weight of failure crashes down, it always lands at the feet of the coach.

"A club's identity will never shaped in a single appointment, nor is it truly changed by a single departure. The cycle will continue. Mid-season changes are not new beginnings. Will never be. They are reminders of what was left unfixed," concluded Ertugral.
