The story
The Premier Soccer League (PSL) revealed on Wednesday that the MTN8 final on 5 October between holders Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC will take place at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Durban has built a reputation for bidding to host South African cup finals and the city has become a perennial MTN8 final host city, staging seven of the last eight.
As revealed by the PSL in their statement, the hosting rights for this season's MTN8 final attracted bids from Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Mpumalanga.
The PSL's Executive Committee opted for to award the hosting rights KZN, much to the disappointment of City of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Hill-Lewis responded to the PSL's announcement on Twitter/X, writing: "We tried." The CPT Mayor initially signaled the Western Cape's intention of hosting MTN8 final when Stellies knocked out Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals over two legs.
Although Hill-Lewis' hopes of bringing the Cape Winelands club closer to their fans by hosting the final at the DHL Stadium have fallen flat, it's likely that the men in maroon will have plenty of supporters in the 031, with Chiefs and Downs fans likely to back the underdog against the defending champions.
