Jwaneng Galaxy's victory over Wydad Casablanca should not be too much of a surprise and it's just a reminder that South African born coach Morena Ramoreboli is destined for great things.
For some time now, I've kept a close eye on Ramoreboli's progress at Galaxy and it's incredible how he has managed to achieve so much with the Botswana Premier League club. Since his arrival, Galaxy have qualified for the Champions League group stages twice and they've won the Premier League title. Some of their big wins in the Champions League include scalps over Tanzanian giants Simba and recently Wydad of Morocco.
It says a lot about the work this man is doing at Galaxy, but it's no surprise at all for me because he has always shown potential to be a good coach, from the time he coached Maluli FET College to a 4-1 victory over Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup back in 2013. All he ever needed was a chance, but he did not get too many in the PSL, until he decided to take up the job in Botswana.
What I like about Ramoreboli is that he did not sit around in South Africa waiting for a club to appoint him. That's what many of the coaches do and some go for long periods without a job. He took the chance to go to Botswana to work with Galaxy and his bravery is paying off.
I wouldn't be surprised if PSL teams start showing an interest in him, but I don't think he should return to South Africa. At least not for the next few years because he has so much more potential to prove himself on the continent and make a mark in competitions such as the Champions League and Confederation Cup.
Looking at how well he is doing with Galaxy, Ramoreboli has the potential to coach in some of the other top leagues on the continent, such as in Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia or Tanzania. He is building a good profile for himself as a coach on the continent and, with time, there are many others who are going to notice the work he is doing and snap him up.
I believe that we need more coaches working in top countries on the continent and Ramoreboli is certainly someone I feel is capable of proving himself with the top dogs of the continent.
A move to the PSL, in my opinion, might not be beneficial, depending on where he goes, of course. If he were to join a club that does not regularly participate in continental competitions, he might not make the progress that I feel he should make as a coach with his talent.
He is definitely raising the South African flag high with Galaxy and a good run in the group stages this season will further show how good he is as a coach.
