THRASHED! Downs End Chiefs Carling Knockout Run

THRASHED! Downs End Chiefs Carling Knockout Run

Kaizer Chiefs' wait for a trophy continues as they were knocked out of the Carling Knockout following a 4-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundnowns on Saturday evening.

Carling Knockout

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 0-4 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 02 November 2024

Venue: FNB Stadium

Chiefs made four changes from their draw against Magesi, as Inacio Miguel, Gaston Sirino, Samkelo Zwane and Wandile Duba were recalled, while the Brazilians recalled Teboho Mokoena as their only change from the win over Cape Town City.

Sundowns had a perfect start after Rayners gave them the lead within the first 13 minutes with a strike from the penalty spot after Samkelo Zwane brought down Lucas Ribeiro Costa in the box.

Manqoba Mngqithi's charges did not allow Chiefs to regroup after Rayners doubled their lead and got his brace with a strike from a cross by Khuliso Mudau.

The visitors remained on the front foot and just before the half-hour mark Shalulile came close to giving them a 3-0 lead with a powerful shot in the box that was saved by goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.

However, the Namibian striker eventually made it 3-0 shortly before the interval with a shot in the box after a through ball by Aubrey Modiba.

Chiefs had a horrible start in the second stanza as ten minutes from the break they were reduced to ten men after Inacio Miguel got a second booking and was sent off.

Things got worse for Amakhosi on the hour-mark, as Sundowns were running riot after Mudau made it 4-0 for Masandawana with a toe-poke from a through ball by Costa.

With the game already in the bag, Mngqithi could afford to rest some key players with 20 minutes to go, as Ribeiro and Rayners made way for Thapelo Maseko and Kutlwano Letlhaku.

The Tshwane giants were threatening to add more goals as they cruised to the semi-finals of the tournament.
