The inaugural 2025 SportPesa Cup certainly lived up to its billing this past weekend. Let's take a quick look back at the thrilling action that unfolded, witnessed by Cape Town City trio Darren Keet, Haashim Domingo, and Jaedin Rhodes.
The 21st of March not only marked Human Rights Day in South Africa, but also the launch of the first-ever SportPesa Cup, held at Edgemead Football Club in Cape Town.
Sixteen teams competed for a share of the R125,000 prize pool, with the winners guaranteed a very handy R50,000.
The tournament featured several of Cape Town's most recognisable local teams, including hosts Edgemead FC, FN Rangers, and Vasco da Gama.
It was the latter, Vasco da Gama, who were crowned the maiden champions of the SportPesa Cup after a hard-fought victory over Durbanville FC in the final.
Naturally, the champions walked away with R50,000, while the runners-up secured R30,000. The third-place finishers FN Rangers also claimed a R15 000 prize.
There was no shortage of familiar faces, including Cape Town City goalkeeper Darren Keet, midfielder Haashim Domingo, and forward Jaedin Rhodes.
Cape Town City chairman John Comitis was also in attendance, as was former Bafana Bafana striker Shaun Bartlett, whose son starred for Edgemead FC.
An additional R30,000 was awarded to the top individual performers. The Player of the Tournament, Golden Glove winner, and Top Goal-scorer each received R10,000 in recognition of their standout performances during the competition.
