CAF Champions League Report, Cote d'Or v Mamelodi Sundowns, 14 September

CAF Champions League

Result: Cote d'Or 0-5 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 14 September 2019

Venue: Stade Linite

A star performance from Tiyani Mabunda saw him bag a brace as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Cote d'Or 5-0 in the first leg of their second round CAF Champions League qualification match on Saturday.

It was the perfect start for Sundowns who took the lead after only five minutes when Mabunda powerfully headed home an inch perfect cross, 1-0.

The Brazilians controlled the game after scoring early on and nearly doubled their lead in the 20th minute when Sphelele Mkhulise let fly from the edge of the box, but his stinging shot went inches over the target.

Mkhulise went close again on the half hour mark after working his way into a shooting position 20-yards out, but his effort skimmed the wrong side of the post.

Sundowns continued to dominate after that, but failed to add to the goal tally before the half-time break.

Cote d'Or started the second half much better and looked a lot more promising in attack, but their decision making in the final third let them down and chances on goal were at a minimum for the home side.

Sundowns soon took control of the match again and the flood gates in the Cote d'Or defence opened. The Brazilians managed to double their lead in 68th minute when Lyle Lakay headed home another super cross, 2-0.

Two minutes later Lakay turned provider with a perfect cross from Mkhulise to scorer Sundowns' third goal.

In the 74th minute, the South African side scored their fourth goal when a powerful long range shot from Mabunda found the top corner of the net. The icing on the cake was Sundowns' fifth goal, scored by Wayne Arendse after a clinical finish in the 84th minute.

The second leg of this CAF Champions League qualification match will be played back in South Africa over the weekend of 27-29 September.
