After announcing they will grant a leave of absence to 550 members of staff but continue paying players wages in full during the coronavirus outbreak, Tottenham Hotspur have been slammed by one of their former players.
Ex-England international and Spurs striker Gary Lineker has taken great offence to the way his former club has handled the suspension of football.
The Lilywhites recently announced a furlough of 550 non-playing staff, which includes an 80% reduction in their salaries, and it is something Lineker, who has donated two months' wages to the British Red Cross, feels is the wrong move.
"The way Tottenham have handled it I don't think has been very good – what they are doing to their staff I don't agree with whatsoever," he told BBC Radio 4's World at One.
"But that is a separate issue to what the players do.
"It's the club that has said that the players are going to carry on with their wages, but let's see how the players react to it."
Lineker continued by saying he expects players, in general, to do more.
"I think a lot of footballers will do something, and I think there will be a lot of announcements at clubs," he added.
"My inkling is that footballers will take pay cuts, they will help out in communities, they will make donations in whatever way they can, and I think we need to be a little bit patient with them."
