EURO 2020: Group Of Death Wide Open After Germany Thrash Portugal

EURO 2020: Group Of Death Wide Open After Germany Thrash Portugal

Gernany 4-2 Portugal

Germany revived their chances of reaching the last 16 at EURO 2020 after hammering Portugal 4-2 in Group F on Saturday evening.

Joachim Low's charges thought they were ahead in the fifth minute after Robin Gosens smashed home a volley from Joshua Kimmich's cross at the back post but the goal was disallowed for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Selecao went on to get the opener from a counter-attack in the 15th minute after Jota went clear on goal and played a simple square pass that was tapped home by Ronaldo, who scored for the first time against Die Mannschaft and extended his record tally in the Euros to 12 goals.

Selecao were defending too deep and they were eventually punished ten minutes before the break after Ruben Dias deflected Gosens' smashing cross into his own net, off his shin, in front of Havertz, who was waiting to pounce.

Die Mannschaft turned the game around six minutes before the break after Kimmich received a cross unmarked at the back post and forced Raphael Guerreiro to turn the cut-back into his own net.

Fernando Santos reacted by making a tactical change at half-time, bringing on Renato Sanches in place of Bernardo Silva but that did not stop Die Mannschaft, as Havertz eventually gave Germany a two-goal cushion six minutes from the break with a tap-in from close range after a cross by Gosens.

Low's troops kept on bursting forward and Gosens finally got on the scoresheet, making it 4-1 on the hour-mark with a free header at the back post after a cross by Kimmich.

Portugal gave themselves a lifeline seven minutes later as Jota pulled a goal back with a volley on the goal-line after a volleyed cut-back by Ronaldo at the far post, but 4-2 was how the clash ended as Germany bag their first win in Group F.

Hungary 1-1 France

France were left frustrated after playing to a 1-1 draw with Hungary at EURO 2020 on Saturday afternoon.

Didier Deschamps made one change from the win over Germany as Lucas Digne started at left-back ahead of Lucas Hernandez while Olivier Giroud once again started on the bench.

Digne looked to take his opportunity with both hands as he created the game's first opening on 16 minutes when his teasing cross found Kylian Mbappe, who surprisingly headed wide from close range.

Mbappe then turned provider in the 30th minute as his flick set up Karim Benzmea in the box, but the Real Madrid star went for the first-time effort and fired wide with only Peter Gulasci to beat.

The opening goal did arrive on the stroke of halftime but not for France, as Hungary caught their opponents on the breaks as Roland Sallai played in Attila Fiola who kept his composure to slot past Hugo Lloris.

Deschamps responded by introducing Ousmane Dembele for Adrien Rabiot just before the hour mark, a decision which nearly paid off immediately as Barcelona rattled the upright a minute after coming on.

The equaliser arrived on 65 minutes as Mbappe lead a swift counter-attack and got ahead of the Hungary defenders before his cross deflected into the path of Antoine Griezmann, who slotted home from close range.

Giroud, Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Lemar were thrown in the final 15 minutes as France went in search of a winning goal, but they were unable to find away as Raphael Varane went wide with a header in second-half stoppage time.
