FIFA World Cup Qualifier
Result: Liberia 0-1 Cote d'Ivoire
Date: 13 November 2015
Venue: Antoinette Tubman Stadium
Cote d'Ivoire took a step closer to FIFA World Cup qualification with a vital 1-0 victory away from home when they were hosted by Liberia at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium.
Liberia would have hoped to cause an upset when they took on the African champions in Monrovia, with a second leg to come, but the reigning champs were quick out the starting blocks making their intentions known in the opening exchanges with a couple of chances.
The clash was proving to be a rather physical affair as both sides broke down play in the middle of the park, but G. Cyriac finally got through on goal and converted to give the visitors a crucial away goal ensuring they headed into the break with the 1-0 advantage.
Both sides made early substitutions in the second stanza, in an effort to build some much needed momentum. The defences were showing great resilience as play was broken down in the middle of the park, making it difficult for either side to get a clear-cut chance.
The sides continued to have a go at each other with the half progressing, but 0-0 is how it would eventually end as Cote d'Ivoure grabbed a crucial away win ahead of Tuesday night's second leg in Ivory Coast.
