Gourcuff, who took over the Algeria coaching role after the World Cup, says he came to Algeria because of the AFCON challenge.
"It is for this challenge of the African Cup of Nations that I came here and I found an interesting team with quality, who are motivated," he told in a pre-match press conference, as quoted by ESPN.
"So I'm very happy I'm very happy with my choice to come here.
"We don't care whether we are favourites or not. We have a game tomorrow and South Africa want to win, too. To consider our-selves favourites or say that (we are) would be disrespectful to our opponents."
Gourcuff, father of French international, Yoann Gourcuff, also insisted his side came to Equatorial-Guinea to win the tournament.
"We are focused on our play and what we want to do. We have been together for a several months now and the players know what to do," he added.
"In this tournament there are 16 teams who want to win the African Cup of Nations. If we play a tournament we want to win it and play in the same state of mind as the others."

While Algeria have not won an opening match at the AFCON since 1990, Bafana won their last opener in 2004.
