Gomes put on an impressive refereeing display at the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year, where he oversaw the final as Senegal beat Egypt on penalties in Cameroon to claim the trophy.
The 39-year-old has been an international official since 2011, and earned respect from his peers and SAFA when he reported an attempted bribe worth more than R300 000 in 2018.
This will be Gomes' first time working at a FIFA World Cup.
