Date: 17 April 2019

Venue: Etihad

Manchester City crashed out of the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur, despite winning a seven-goal thriller in the second leg.

The Citizens got off to the perfect start when Raheem Sterling sent a fine curling effort past Hugo Lloris on four minutes to level matters on aggregate.

Spurs were level on the night three minutes later through Son Heung-Min, who pounced on a loose ball in the box and fired past Ederson.

Son was at it again on 10 minutes after collecting a cross from Christian Eriksen to send the ball into the top corner with a superb finish/

The visitors' joy was short-lived though as Bernardo Silva restored parity on the night with a strike that took a deflection off Danny Rose and sailed into the bottom corner.

Just as many thought the game would calm down, the home side went in front on 21 minutes, with Sterling completing his brace with a close-range finish to make 3-2 on the night and 3-3 on aggregate.

Spurs were dealt a blow shortly before the break as the in-form Moussa Sissoko was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Fernando Llorente.

After a lively start to the second half, City netted their fourth goal on the night through Sergio Aguero's thumping strike on 58 minutes.

The City fans were silenced with 16 minutes to play as Spurs pulled a goal back through Llorente's unorthodox finish to make it 4-4 on aggregate.

With seven minutes remaining, City manager Pep Guardiola finally introduced Leroy Sane, with full-back Benjamin Mendy making way.

Sterling had the ball in the back of the net in second-half stoppage time through Sterling, but after checking with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the goal was ruled out as Aguero was deemed offside in the build-up.

In the end, Spurs managed to see out the remaining stages to advance to the final four of the tournament.
