UEFA Champions League
Result: Atletico Madrid 0-0 Real Madrid
Date: 14 April 2015
Venue: Vicente Calderon
Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid played out to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie at the Vicente Calderon on Tuesday night.
Real should have opened the scoring as early as the fourth minute when Gareth Bale broke free down the middle but the Welshman failed to beat the on-rushing Jan Oblak.
The Atletico shot-stopper was called into action in the 32nd minute, as he pulled off a fine save to keep out Bale's stinging effort from distance.
The visitors went close again five minutes later through James Rodriguez but the midfielder's effort from the edge of the box forced Oblak into yet another fine save.
Atletico could have broken the deadlock just before the halftime break but Antoine Griezmann failed to direct his header on target from close range.
Both sides had chances in the closing stages of the first half, however poor finishing saw them head into the break with the score level at 0-0.
The second half proved to be the complete opposite of the first, as both sides were guilty of committing numerous fouls, which saw a couple of players pick up yellow cards.
The hosts' best chance of the second stanza arrived in the 80th minute but defender, Diego Godin, blasted over from inside the area.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who was non-existent throughout the game, failed to trouble Oblak from close range in stoppage time, as the first leg ended goalless at the Vicente Calderon.
Carlo Ancelotti will be without the services of defender, Marcelo, for the second leg through suspension, while Atletico's Mario Saurez also picked up his second booking and will miss the second leg.
